Premier Inn, Cardiff Bay
Cardiff Bay Premier Inn is a 210 Bedroom Hotel development located in Cardiff Bay in close proximity to Millennium Centre.
From the offset, the Design and Build Team were tasked with the crucial role of value engineering a previously designed scheme so to bring the scheme within commercial consideration.
Shear Design played a pivotal role in this process, namely utilising our experience in hotel structures to demonstrate a steel frame could offer both cost and program savings to the buildings superstructure and substructure whilst ensuring the critical clear floor heights were not compromised. This proposal and its benefits were welcomed by the whole team.
Providing the structure to a building that aims to add to the vibrant character of Cardiff Bay did not come without its design challenges. Diagonal feature columns along the hotels frontage and a sharp cantilevered building edge were amongst a few of the buildings unique features. Shear Design opted for compositely designed steel and concrete floors to ensure the shallowest and most efficient beam sizes were utilised. The entire superstructure was analysed and modelled using the three dimensional software.
The below ground features of the historic Bute Docks also required careful consideration to ensure a suitable foundation solution to the building above whilst ensuring strict geo environmental restrictions were met.
The existing dock structures were pre-bored to facilitate bored piles. Sacrificial steel casing and bentonite plugs ensured there was no contamination into the below ground water courses. Finally deep reinforced concrete caps were designed to span over voids in the ground below and support the building structure above.
Due to land ownership challenges, the foul drainage infrastructure design had to change resulting in use of directional drilling through the maze of installed piles which was challenging.
