New Boardwalk Porthcawl, Bridgend
Shear Design were commissioned by LGA Limited on behalf of Bridgend County Council to design 320 metres of boardwalk along the Porthcawl coast line. The scheme was also to include new signage, viewing platform and gates that can be operated by wheelchair/pushchair users and people with limited mobility.
The entire scheme was designed using recycled plastic boards, posts and hand rails and chosen to compliment the rugged coastal terrain and popular “Blue Flag” area of Rest Bay. Very careful consideration was given to the properties of the material due to the requirements of thermal expansion/contraction and construction of movement joints. The specialist producer of the recycled material used was Plastic Premier Recycling. The product has a very high sensitivity to temperature and design criteria from the Client was that this boardwalk would need to cater for operating temperatures ranging from ‐15°C to + 60°C, be durable and have a resistance to fire. This was the largest project ever commissioned by the Council Rights of Way team.
