John Frost School, Newport
Shear Design are the Civil and Structural Engineers on a new £20 million school project in Duffryn, Newport which will eventually provide over 2000 places for Welsh and English-speaking pupils in Newport.
The scheme includes a new teaching block for the John Frost School as well as a new Welsh-medium school and extensive elements of refurbishment of the existing teaching facilities.
Shear Design worked closely with the project team including BAM Construction, Boyes Rees Architects, Newport Norse and the School management to deliver this prestigious project which will transform the existing Duffryn High School campus.
The new buildings will be constructed at elevated levels with voids below ground floor designed into the scheme to mitigate flood plain loss which was a key consideration at the planning stages.
We were commissioned from initial feasibility stages, through planning and construction of the project. The new buildings are predominantly reinforced concrete and flat slabs with localised structural frames to accommodate the space requirements of more specialised teaching areas.
Foundations are piled throughout. Surface water attenuation has been designed throughout the scheme to ensure post development surface water run-off rates do not exceed the previous “green field” run off rates.
